One of the most common questions I get from parents is:
“Should my child learn cursive writing or block letters first?”
It’s a great question—and the answer really depends on the child. At Simone’s Tutoring, I work with children of all ages to build confident, clear handwriting using both block and cursive writing styles. In this post, I’ll walk you through the key differences, benefits, and how I approach teaching them.

📝 Cursive Writing vs Block Letters: What’s the Right Choice for Your Child?
🧠 What Are Block Letters?
Block letters—sometimes called print letters—are the standard uppercase and lowercase letters written separately. These are the letters children usually learn first at school, and for good reason!
💡 Why I teach block letters first:
They’re easier for young learners to recognize and form
They match what children see in storybooks, signs, and worksheets
They build the foundation for reading and spelling
They’re used in formal settings like forms or labels
When I teach block letters, I focus on clear formation, consistent size, and fun activities to keep little hands busy and engaged. It’s perfect for early learners in FS1 to Year 2 (or KG1 to Grade 1).
✨ What Is Cursive Writing?
Cursive handwriting is where the magic of writing really flows. It’s the art of connecting letters in a smooth, continuous motion. Many children find it exciting because it feels more expressive—and grown-up!
💡 Why I love teaching cursive writing:
It encourages speed and fluidity
It supports muscle memory and fine motor development
It often improves spelling through continuous movement
It allows children to develop their own writing “style”
At Simone’s Tutoring, I introduce cursive writing gently, with lots of encouragement and creative practice pages. It’s ideal for children who already feel confident in their letter formation and are ready for the next step.
📝 So, Which Comes First?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s a rough guide based on age and stage:
Age/Stage | Recommended Style | Why? |
3–6 years (FS1–Year 1) | Block Letters | Helps build strong recognition and control |
7–9 years (Year 2–Year 4) | Start Cursive Writing | Great for rhythm, memory, and confidence |
10+ years (Year 5+) | Cursive & Refinement | Ideal for note-taking and speed writing |
I always tailor my lessons to each child’s strengths, learning style, and interests. Some kids love the challenge of cursive writing early on, while others need more time mastering block letters—and that’s absolutely okay!

Whether your child is just starting or needs help refining their writing, I offer:
