Watching a child learn to read is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do—but I also know it can feel overwhelming for many young learners. That’s why I use a method called synthetic phonics, supported by colour-coded graphemes, to help children build reading skills faster and with more confidence.
🧠 What is Synthetic Phonics?
Synthetic phonics is all about teaching children how to decode words by breaking them into sounds (phonemes) and blending those sounds together. Instead of memorizing entire words, they learn the building blocks of language—how sounds connect to letters. This approach helps kids read unfamiliar words on their own and strengthens both reading and writing.
🌈 Why I Use Colour-Coded Graphemes
English has many tricky letter combinations that form a single sound, like sh, ee, or igh. To make these easier to remember, I use colour-coded graphemes in my lessons.
For example, the word "sheep" would highlight sh in blue and ee in green, making those sound chunks stand out clearly.
This visual support helps children:
Recognize patterns more easily
Remember difficult sounds
Stay engaged and confident
📚 How It Helps Kids Read More—and Faster
From my experience, using colour and sound together makes a noticeable difference. Children start to blend sounds more smoothly, decode new words quickly, and feel proud of themselves. That sense of achievement encourages them to pick up more books and read more often. Over time, their fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary naturally grow.
✨ How I Teach at Simone’s Tutoring
I design my sessions to be fun, hands-on, and tailored to each child’s level. Whether I’m using flashcards, interactive games, or blending activities, my goal is to make reading enjoyable and effective. With the right guidance and tools, every child can become a confident reader.
