Oxford TSA Has Been Replaced by TARA for 2027 Entry: What UAE Applicants Need to Know
If you or your child is preparing to apply to the University of Oxford for 2027 entry, you may still be seeing older websites, tutoring resources and admissions guides referring to the TSA — Thinking Skills Assessment.
For the relevant Oxford courses, that information is now out of date. Oxford's current 2027-entry admissions testing uses TARA — the Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions — rather than TSA.

What is TARA?
TARA stands for Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions. It is a computer-based university admissions test managed by UAT-UK and delivered through Pearson test centres.
For 2027 entry, Oxford uses UAT-UK admissions tests including TARA, TMUA and ESAT depending on the course. Law continues to use the LNAT, while Medicine uses the UCAT. This means TARA is not the admissions test for every Oxford degree; it applies to a specific group of courses.
Which Oxford courses require TARA for 2027 entry?
According to the University of Oxford's current admissions-test guidance, TARA is required for:
Economics and Management
History and Economics
History and Politics
Human Sciences
Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE)
Psychology (Experimental)
Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics
Oxford's PPE with Foundation Year also uses TARA, although Foundation Year applicants have different application and test-sitting arrangements. Students should always check the official Oxford page for their exact course and entry year because admissions requirements can change.
TARA vs TSA: what has changed?
The most important point for 2027 applicants is that preparation should be based on the current TARA specification rather than assuming the old TSA format still applies.
TARA is divided into three compulsory 40-minute modules:
Critical Thinking — 22 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes.
Problem Solving — 22 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes.
Writing Task — one response chosen from three questions, with a maximum of 750 words in 40 minutes.
The complete test therefore takes about 120 minutes. Students cannot use a calculator or dictionary. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are scored separately on a scale from 1 to 9. The Writing Task is not scored by UAT-UK; instead, the response is sent to the universities to which the student has applied for courses requiring TARA.
TARA is non-subject-specific. Students are not expected to revise a PPE, Economics, History or Psychology syllabus for the test. It assesses academic reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking and written communication.
Are old TSA papers still useful?
Yes — but they should be used carefully. Although TSA itself is no longer the current Oxford admissions test for these 2027-entry courses, the underlying reasoning skills remain relevant.
Oxford's Department of Experimental Psychology specifically recommends exploring past papers and practice materials and states that TSA and BMAT past papers are suitable materials to help prepare for TARA.
However, students should not simply work through TSA papers and assume they are fully preparing for the current test. Preparation should now be organised around the three-module TARA structure, the current timings and the Writing Task. UAT-UK also provides official preparation material and recommends becoming familiar with the test format and completing the specimen test under timed conditions.
Important dates for Oxford 2027 entry
For standard Oxford undergraduate applicants requiring TARA, the test window is 12–16 October 2026.
Oxford states that applicants for undergraduate courses with the 15 October UCAS deadline must take the October sitting. At the time of writing on 25 September 2026, test booking closes at 6:00 PM UK time on 28 September 2026.
Students applying for certain Oxford Astrophoria Foundation Year programmes with a January application deadline have different arrangements and may be able to use the January 2027 sitting.
What should UAE students preparing for TARA focus on?
For students in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and elsewhere in the UAE, the move from TSA to TARA is a good reason to review any existing Oxford admissions-preparation plan.
A strong preparation programme should develop several areas together:
Critical Thinking: identifying assumptions, conclusions, flaws and reasoning patterns efficiently.
Problem Solving: using systematic quantitative and logical strategies, including working without a calculator.
Writing: constructing a clear, concise and defensible argument within the 40-minute Writing Task.
Timing: practising accurate reasoning under the pressure of strict section time limits.
Application awareness: making sure preparation is aligned to the student's exact Oxford course and current admissions requirements.
Oxford does not assess an applicant solely on an admissions test. Admissions tests sit alongside the other information used to assess academic potential and suitability for a course.
Applying to Oxford from Dubai or the UAE?
It is easy for UAE families researching Oxford university admissions to encounter outdated information online. Searches for phrases such as “Oxford TSA tutor”, “TSA preparation” or “TSA Oxford PPE” can still bring up older resources.
For a student applying for 2027 entry, the first question should now be: What is the current admissions test for my exact Oxford course? For PPE, Economics and Management, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology and the other courses listed above, that answer is currently TARA.
Families should therefore make sure any tutoring, practice programme or admissions guidance they use has been updated for the 2027 Oxford admissions cycle.
How Simone's Tutoring can support the wider application process
At Simone's Tutoring, we believe university preparation should be personalised rather than treated as a one-size-fits-all checklist.
Students applying to competitive UK universities may need a combination of academic tuition, admissions-test preparation, reasoning skills, study planning, UCAS guidance and interview preparation depending on their individual application.
Our UK University & UCAS Guidance service supports students and families with university research, course selection, application strategy, UCAS planning and deadline management, with UAE home-based support subject to specialist availability.
For students preparing for Oxford, the first step is making sure the preparation plan reflects today's admissions requirements rather than last year's test.
