From pumpkins to picture books – make reading a treat this Halloween
Happy Halloween!
As I sit here surrounded by little pumpkins, spider-web crafts, and the faint smell of chocolate in the air, I can’t help but reflect on what this day means for children — especially those with sensory sensitivities.
Halloween is such a magical time for imagination and creativity. Children get to transform into their favorite characters, explore pretend play, and giggle through stories of friendly ghosts and pumpkins that come to life. But for some little ones, especially those with sensory challenges, the lights, noises, textures, and costumes can feel overwhelming rather than exciting.
As a tutor and educator, I’ve learned that Halloween doesn’t have to be loud or scary to be meaningful. It can be a wonderful Sensory-Friendly Halloween opportunity to teach empathy, emotional awareness, and creative expression. Sometimes, it’s as simple as reading together, using storytime as a safe doorway into the Halloween spirit — no flashing lights or itchy costumes required.
Here are a few Halloween-themed books I love to recommend and read with my students:
📚 Halloween book recommendations for children

The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Creepy‑Crawly Halloween:
Recommended Age: 0–3 years (Infant to Toddler)
Reading Level: Pre-Reader / Board Book
The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Creepy‑Crawly Halloween: A board book fashioned like a pumpkin, featuring the classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar character in a Halloween adventure. Great for very young children or for a cosy story-moment with younger siblings. From the Penguin list of top kids Halloween reads.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Halloween Trick or Treat:
Recommended Age: 2–4 years (Toddler to Preschool)
Reading Level: Pre-Reader / Read-Aloud Level
The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Halloween Trick or Treat: Another friendly option from the same brand, with treat-hunt and mild spooky themes — very safe for early years.

Find Spot at Halloween:
Recommended Age: 1–4 years (Baby to Early Preschool)
Reading Level: Pre-Reader / Interactive Board Book
Find Spot at Halloween: An interactive lift-the-flap book (featuring the lovable Spot) that builds fine-motor skills, curiosity, and engagement. Ideal for your younger child who may resist more active sensory tasks (this puts the “action” into the page rather than into the child). From a recent children’s lit list.

The Super‑Spooky Fright Night!:
Recommended Age: 5–7 years (Early Readers / Year 1–2)
Reading Level: Early Reader / Level 2–3 (short sentences, simple paragraphs)
The Super‑Spooky Fright Night!: A slightly more playful and “fright-ish” but still age-appropriate early reader. Good for transitioning kids from picture books into short-chapter reads.

The Haunting of Aveline Jones:
Recommended Age: 9–12 years (Upper Primary / Middle Grade)
Reading Level: Independent Reader / Level 4–5
The Haunting of Aveline Jones: A middle-grade haunted-house novel that could be perfect for older siblings or for families wanting “just a little more scare”. Using the narrative of exploration, courage, and spooky fun rather than sheer fear.

Scholastic Haunted Museum Boxed Set:
Recommended Age: 9–12 years (Upper Primary / Early Teens)
Reading Level: Fluent / Level 4–6 (Middle Grade)
Scholastic Haunted Museum Boxed Set: A boxed set for upper primary/listener-to-chapter-book kids focussed on ghosts, monsters and fun chills. Great for book-clubs or classroom sharing.

At Simone’s Tutoring, I believe every child deserves a sensory-friendly Halloween filled with gentle fun and imaginative stories. Whether we’re working on phonics, reading fluency, or comprehension, adding a touch of Halloween magic helps children connect learning with imagination.
For our sensory-sensitive learners, the focus is always on comfort and choice — maybe that means reading with soft lighting, cuddling a favorite toy, or creating their own “friendly monster” drawings instead of going trick-or-treating. Every child deserves to feel included in the magic of the day in their own way.
So today, whether your little one is out collecting candy or curled up at home with a pumpkin-shaped cookie and a good book, I hope you make space for calm, laughter, and connection.
Happy Halloween from Simone’s Tutoring — where learning is always a treat! 🎃
